Ridgeland Police Department
When Law Enforcement Steps Up
A recent case in Ridgeland offers a powerful example of local leadership in animal protection. In June 2025, a welfare check revealed a homeowner had moved out, leaving behind four cats two dead and two severely malnourished. The surviving cats were rushed to the Mississippi Animal Rescue League for care. The Ridgeland Police Department swiftly opened an investigation, leading to the arrest of 39-year-old Megan Victoria Davis on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty and a $10,000 bond.
We commend Ridgeland Police Department for taking a principled stand protecting vulnerable animals, pursuing justice, and reinforcing that animal cruelty is not tolerated.
The Path Forward
Mississippi shelters and law enforcement work tirelessly for animal welfare, but they can’t go it alone. While policy changes and funding are critical, it’s equally important to spotlight community heroes like the Ridgeland Police Department, whose decisive action on the abandoned cats demonstrates what leadership and compassion look like in practice.
Together through adoption, policy, partnerships, and public awareness we can transform the animal welfare landscape across Mississippi, ensuring our shelters are not just surviving, but supported, sustainable, and humane.
